[Penggunaan TITLE Dr.] The Traditional & complementary Medicine Division of the Ministry of Health, Malaysia is still receiving complaints from members of the public on the use of the title ‘Dr’ amongst complementary medicine practitioners. Ministry of Health and Federation of Complementary & Natural Medical Associations, Malaysia (FCNMAM) takes a serious view regarding this matter. This issue has been raised in Parliament and discussed at the Ministry of Health Technical Committee headed by the Deputy Director General, Dato’ Dr Maimunah A. Hamid. Therefore, FCNMAM would like the cooperation of all its members. 1. With reference to the ‘Medical Act 1971′ (Amendment 2006), only those registered under this Act are permitted to use the title ‘Dr’. Anyone found using the title ‘Dr’ and not registered under the Medical Act 1971, has infringed the law and may be prosecuted in the court of law under this Act. 2. Practitioners are prohibited from using the title ‘Dr’ on a name plate, letterhead, notebook, business card, directory or introduce oneself as a registered medical practitioner. 3. Practitioners must not allow anyone from referring to him/her as a registered medical practitioner without correcting the error. 4. Holders of a PhD from institutions accredited by the Public Services Department or country of origin from place of study, are permitted to use the title ‘Dr’ before their name but must include a PhD after their name. 5. Under the Medical Act 1971, it mentions that the use of name, title or additions that can mislead another person into believing that the practitioner possessed qualifications to carry out his practice or perform surgery is deemed to have committed an offence under the ‘Medical Act 1971′.
