People!! Please refrain from saying aroha mai to express how sorry - TopicsExpress

People!! Please refrain from saying aroha mai to express how sorry you are for someones loss!! Saying aroha mai is to plead forgiveness for YOUR OWN wrong doing or acknowledging YOU were wrong! Aroha mai, nōku te hē!! Saying it to someone coz their dad or mum or whanau member died is WAY out of context!! Aroha- to love or feel pity Mai- indicates the direction toward the speaker For example: Hori: my mums brother just passed away Hine: oh aroha mai/ have pity for me!! It doesnt really make sense to sayAroha mai to someone who has lost a loved one does it?? How ever you could use this instead- Ka aroha hoki which means how sad or what a pity which indicates you are sympathising to one for their loss!! Hori: just heard my mums brother just passed away Hine: oh ka aroha hoki (Im sorry to hear is the context of this kōrero) Just a little late night rant for ya lol sorry just had to share after i saw quite a few people use that term aroha mai for someone losing a family member!! #RantOver #SorryForTheNovel #NotSorry #HopeImRight #ShameIfNot
