People are asking me more and more, why are vets against feeding your animal raw meat and I seriously cant answer that. I know some vets that swear by it and I know some who swear by feeding foods with grains (corn, wheat, soy) in it. An animal with a cronic disorder that affects the digestive system should have a very easy to digest food and some need to stay away from protein, which is sad since their systems are designed to digest protein quickly and efficiently, but that is a medical health question and I am not a vet so I cant answer that, but as a nutritionist (and after feeding and caring for HUNDREDS of animals) the more meat in a HEALTHY dogs (or cats for that matter) diet (real meat) with the least possible grains (corn, wheat, soy) the healthier and the nicer looking the animal. While grains dont do any harm, other than risk extra fat and cause more fur shedding, they arent doing them any good either. A food with more real meat than grains is always my recommendation, always. Some dogs have problems with certain meats, can cause gas, so switch the meat base of the food. If I could afford to only feed my dogs raw I would. But, alas, that is a pipe dream, but I do know when feeding raw there are dangers. 1: Make sure the meat is BALANCED. It has to have NUMEROUS meat sources and organ sources and bone sources to be a complete diet. Just feeding your dog hamburg with a few veggies will get it sick in no time. They need the nutrients that come from the organs; heart, liver kidneys. 2:Humans can be dumb and risk their pets health when they are feeding raw. No different than hygiene when it comes to preparing our meat; it can not sit out too long, it can NOT be cooked (real raw diet for dogs have bone fragments, which they need, but cooked the bone becomes hard and gets hard and brittle) and your pets bowl must be washed after eat feeding. Getting the meat from an unreliable source and not taking proper hygiene can get your pet e-coli in no time flat. So, there are so many pet foods out there and so many prices that go with them, but you know your pet. If you see TOO much hair loss, find a food with more natural omegas (I usually recommend a fish based diet-or the addition of fish oil to the food). Each and every animal is different, what works great for one may not for the other. If your dog has serious gas, find an alternative meat source (I usually recommend pork for the farters-chickens since they eat grains have been known to cause some hefty gas). I am not for or against feeding any food, but I do know that when you feed a bit higher quality now, it WILL end up saving you money down the line on vets. Theres no debating that one.
