People are being raped every hour across India. And I daresay that it is only a few of these cases that actually see the light of the day, or catch the eye of the media, print or otherwise, though people might claim that more and more rape cases are being reported nowadays. Whenever I see another rape report doing the rounds on social media circuits, I am made aware of the fact that just like this one wronged woman, there may just be ten, or fifty other women and men who have been raped and have kept things quiet for the sake of family, prestige and honour. It is, of course, the fear of the stigmatisation of the victim in a culturally confounded, inherently violent country like ours that is responsible for this. I shudder to think of the immense amount of trauma that is slowly seeping into the people of this country through this intricate and morbid dynamic of victimisation and silencing.
