People are happier about spending time and money on an event vs. - TopicsExpress

People are happier about spending time and money on an event vs. an item. People who wait in line for an event are generally more engaged with others vs. waiting in line for the latest gadget. Years ago Zola Ryan and I were waiting in line for a movie. It was Home Alone and was popular enough at the time that the line went out into the mall itself. It was during Christmas season if memory serves so there were lots of shoppers milling about. A teen girl from Bend struck up a conversation with us. The film Green Card had just come out. It was about a French man entering into a sham marriage in order to get his green card. Since it was a romantic comedy you know the two would fall in love. Anyway, she said she was going to watch it because she was taking French in school. Her friend had been out and about in the mall and came over to her holding a stack of radio window stickers. We all continued our conversation and noticed the friend casually peeling the paper off of the stickers and placing them face down on the mall floor, sticky side up right in the path of shoppers. We saw stickers get caught on all sorts of shoes, baby stroller wheels. We saw several near misses. The people in line for both films began paying attention. Who would step on the next sticker? We began making oooh and ah sounds like spectators at an athletic event. The theater manager came over to us to announce they were seating for Home Alone and right when he faced us stepped directly on a sticker. Im not sure if he ever understood why we laughed at him when he told us Home Alone would begin soon. Another fun thing to do when youre with a group of people and near a drive through to a restaurant is to put teddy grahams in the roadway and see whose bear will get squished. Anyway back to the article: I think a reason why experiences are more valuable than possessions is that an experience is generally shared with loved ones.
