People are of the opinion, to need or be attached to a Guru is a kind of dependency, and for the weak! Who, is free from dependency? Some are dependent on one or the other material object, be it wealth, power, possession, pride, recognition, habits, emotions for their happiness. Life is a journey, away from our eternal home and a return, back to the home. Back home is where we have left our joy and peace. Only one who has walked the path and reached home will be able to direct us back. Such a one we call The Guru. Till then we sway between temporary happy and sorrowful moments, caught up in a whirlpool but alas we know it not. We seek eternal happiness but dont know where to find it thus increasing our desires and rather create for ourself more and more distance away from happiness. The irony is that we are drifting further away from what we are seeking because we looking for it in the wrong direction. Few realize, with the help of the Guru, that what we are seeking, is not to be found in and from, where we are looking. The Guru helps us retrace the lost track left behind. These lost souls, then, take an about turn and follow the foot steps (guidance) of the Guru. They are what I would call old souls, tired and weary from the cycle of birth and death, come back to seek help. The journey is long and filled with hardships as one must renounce all that has been gathered during this lengthy drift. Parting has always been known to be difficult and sorrowful so most still wish to cling on. The intensity of longing to return helps renunciation faster. Dependency on a Guru is therefore, I realize, much more necessary than on objects of the world which takes you on a Merry-go-round, giving some thrills but getting one nowhere. This I have learnt today!
