People say how bad a film Star Trek: The Motion Picture is. Think about this: The 2009 film made $288,475,900, the most of any Star Trek film. The next closest? Star Trek: The Motion Picture with an adjusted gross income of $273,648,700. Now, I know that gross income isnt an indicator of how good a film actually is, but most films in the late 70s, especially Science Fiction films, simply did not make this kind of money (with an obvious glaring exception). The big name films that most people remember did well, but few did this well (and several, like Close Encounters had several releases). It took more than flashy special effects to get butts into seats in those days... a film kind of had to be good to make money (again, with some exceptions).
