People say put your phone away and just enjoy it. As someone who is addicted to filming everything especially on a trip, I think that it depends on the person. For me personally its a myth, in fact its even the opposite. I dont think it distracts me or makes my experience any less enjoyable, in fact a lot times it can make it more fun and I am still present in the moment. I especially realized this when I discovered that any time I dont film our adventures and simply try to enjoy it I have major regret after the fact and Ill tell you why: The trips that I do document I put together in a 30-60 minute video and when I watch the video its like a time machine. I am instantly transported back to that trip. I can smell the ocean, I can hear the music, I remember the exact feelings that I felt in every scene. I can feel the excitement, the romance, and everything else I felt at that time. Its instantly transports me emotionally and mentally back to that time. I am saddened by the trips I just tried to enjoy because now all I have are fading memories of bits and pieces, but the ones I did document I can go sit down and watch and I really do feel like I am reliving it all over again in a weird sense. My regrets are that I didnt trust my instinct and film the other trips because there are great memories that will fade with age and I so wish I could go and relive them as well. Memories fade, but videos last forever. If its not too distracting for you then I encourage you, forget what people say, record whatever you want to, be willing to be that young person on their phone because you will be glad you did and if you miss that chance, it probably never comes back. My memory certainly isnt as clear as an actual video and I wish I would have captured more.
