People that know me know that I believe in quality food over quantity food. I believe in reading labels and having a hand in preserving the freshness of food. I am also a big proponent in supporting farmers and small businesses nation wide (it does help that I am a burgeoning small business owner). As of late this big city girl has taken on the task of learning a few homesteaders culinary skills. It isnt easy let me tell you, but my word its extremely satisfying. There is nothing like tasting Bing cherry jam youve created or the pop of a lid on the heirloom tomatoes youve canned during the summer. My newest task? Rendering beef suet into tallow (all of my hard core vegan friends...forgive me) for savory pie crust. I made the mistake of reading the back of a processed lard packaging and almost wanted to vomit. There is no reason for that many chemical additives to be used for one simple product. So, to all my purist cooks, homesteaders and friends alike...wish me luck.
