People will take advantage of your kindness. People will take without giving. People will transgress without recognizing their transgressions. People will slap every cheek you turn (and never any of them in the good way). People will use you, grind you down, jade you, discard you. People will leave you feeling old and tired and angry and sad. People will break you. But there is only one thing: you can never let the last person’s cruelty prevent you from being kind to the next. That is the only defeat that you can inflict upon yourself. Learn and grow. Patience and constancy.
