Peoples History of Elkhart is pleased to announce the Historic Roosevelt Summer Academy as the recipient of this year’s ‘Jericho Road Award’ for Transformative Change. Organizers and volunteers from the program’s five-year history who can attend will be recognized on Monday, Jan. 20 at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, as part of a King Day celebration, beginning at 2:00 p.m. https://facebook/events/801956299818956/?ref_dashboard_filter=calendar As young people today face the persistence of the poverty, racism, and violence that Martin Luther King, Jr. struggled against, the Historic Roosevelt Summer Academy demonstrates the kind of creative outlets and supportive community essential for youth to overcome these barriers and lead our community toward a brighter future. In 2009, neighbors in South Central Elkhart came together to create the Historic Roosevelt Summer Academy, now heading toward its sixth year of serving the youth of Elkhart through summer courses in arts and culture. While Elkhart residents from all walks of life have a wide range of talents, rarely are they brought together in one place with such dedication -- providing artistic and cultural opportunities for those who may not otherwise have access due to economic challenges. Id love for as many people Summer Academy people as possible to be recognized -- so if youre free, consider coming to celebrate! I know Im leaving out lots, but I want to mention at least Paul Bertha,Brenda Brenda Bertha, Gabriela Tovar, Michael Downing, Regina Roberson, Charissa Barnes, Rachel Denlinger, Maddie Williams, Rachel Stoltzfus, Heidi Rupley, Nick Simons, Paula Bancer, Nicole Bauman, Rachel Koontz, Alex Anderson, Adam Williams, Maggie Gushwa-Williams, Delicias Vegetarianas, Anne Meyer Byler, Ginnie Langley, Tom Langley, Jason Moreno, Rebecca Mix, Becky Perez, Lupita Zepeda, Sheila Maeda, Patsy Ollis, Sidney Jay, Michael Jemison, Julia King, and LaCasa, Inc..!
