Per Earl Mindell OBESITY LINKED TO 30 to 40% OF ALL CANCERS The single most important thing yo can do to reduce and prevent your risk of cancer is to lose weight, especially if you are obese (Usually 30 or more pounds (14 Kg) over the average for your height. Excess body fat increases your risk for cancer in at least six of the following ways: 1. Excess fat promotes chronic inflammation. The fat that surrounds your internal organs promotes high levels of three pro-inflammatory substances that have been associated with increased cancer risks and shorter survival in many different cancer types. 2. Excess fat increases hormonal activity. Fat cells secrete estrogens. High levels of estrogen have been associated with breast and endometrial cancer in women. 3. Excess fat suppresses yoproduce the enymeur immune system. Levels of natural killer cells are lower and they exhibit decreased function at scavenging tumor cells in people who are obese. Fat cells produce the enzyme that turns inactive cortisone into active cortisol. Cortisol is an immune suppressant. 4. Excess fat tissue stores toxins, such as organic pollutants and heavy metals in fat tissue. These substances have been associated with cancer risks. 5. Excess fat decreases insulin sensitivity. Lower insulin sensitivity leads to higher levels of free circulating insulin and insulin-like growth factor. Higher circulating insulin is associated with elevated caner rates. 6. Excess fat makes you less likely to exercise.
