Per the Ocean City Beach Patrol, please stay safe everyone! Thank you Kyle for this great example that clearly shows the dynamics of a rip current. In this case water trapped on the beach (tide pool) is making its way back out to the ocean. In a rip current this scenario is occurring below the surface of the water when water is being transported from the trough through a break in the sandbar out into deeper water. What makes this hard for non experienced swimmers to see because it is occurring several feet below the surface of the water. It is far more treacherous to weak swimmers. If you hear the lifeguard blow a whistle check to see if they are trying to get your attention.
