Performing Ray Holmans Composition Love Theme at UTTs Young Artist Recital Featuring Andre Mangatal In Feb 2013 In 1991, distinguished Trinidadian composer and pan arranger Ray Holman was approached by the Crossroads Theatre Company of New Jersey to compose the musical score for a theatrical version of the movie BLACK ORPHEUS. Initially produced in 1959, the film BLACK ORPHEUS won both Academy and Golden Globe Awards for the Best Foreign Film in 1960. The plot is an adaptation of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and is set in the modern context of the Rio de Janeiro slums during the Carnival. The 1991 staged version had a Caribbean theme and was sold out for three weeks in New Jersey, followed by a run in Washington D.C. The New York Times in its review stated that the music was comparable to what Leonard Bernstein did for WEST SIDE STORY.
