Perhaps nothing about UKZN is as bizarre as the inability of its leadership to lead the institution. Every year violent strikes occur and the fundamental issues remain unsolved. Right now the strike is about the registration fees for 2015. The current fees are due to be increased affecting all students. The problem here is that the University employs an entire executive team whose capacity to communicate borders on incompetent incoherence at best. Universities are funded by the state primarily. The state pays its subsidies at the end of May every year. Consequently the University is responsible for its own cash flows for the first 5 months of the year. To fund this - the running costs for the first 5 months are calculated and then divided by the student population to work out the registration fees. Over the past 6 years - UKZN has consciously capped such fees at unsustainably low levels (presumably to avoid the annual fiasco of protests) and the time to review the fees is now upon us. We can only assume that this conscious deflation was implemented in order to give the leadership 5 years to come up with a plan - which they have failed to do. However when the combined remuneration package of your executive team is in excess of R25 million per annum youd think that an ability to furnish students with this simple explanation would be the type of thing they can do. But thats none of my business...
