Ironically, 1961 was the last year Detroit had a Republican mayor. Today Detroit became the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Last February, The Detroit News wrote that Detroit’s tax rate “is tops among big cities nationwide.” Motown has lost a million residents, 60% of those remaining are living in poverty and 50% are functionally illiterate. But here’s perhaps the best example of liberal insanity on steroids: Today 2/3 of Detroit public school students don’t graduate high school. A few years back a philanthropist offered $200 million to create 15 new Detroit charter high schools. The response? The teachers unions staged a walk-out and the schools were never built. Detroit is the dead canary in our nation’s coal mine. Be nice if places like California stood up and finally took notice. Be even nicer if we had a president who wasn’t obsessed with turning America into one big Detroit. P"
