Periodically, one of my friends or colleagues posts something about how writing cant be taught. For what its worth, I think that idea is usually put forward in a specious manner, and usually by someone with an axe to grind with the academy. In the west, the very foundations of formal education rest on the idea that writing can (and should!) be taught. Rhetoric and grammar were two of the three legs the very idea of education existed on in classical and early Medieval times. Now, I know, some will say Thats not what theyre saying, theyre talking about voice, style, etc. or Thats not the same as talent. Well, talent can always be nurtured, and voice, style, and etc. (whatever etc. may be) have to exist within a disciplined system to be substantive. Nurture and discipline are what teaching IS.
