Perry County lost one of its historic treasures this morning. The Dellville Covered Bridge was destroyed by fire early this morning. The longest of the remaining countys covered bridges was built in 1889 after the great June flood that most people know as the great Johnstown flood. It was rebuilt in 1973 to repair damage as a result of the Hurricane Agnes flood the year before when an old Newport and Shermans Valley railroad car carried by the flood waters slammed into the historic structure moving it from its foundation. Firefighters suspect arson as the entire length of the bridge was on fire when the roar of the flames awoke the neighbors. Sad day in the village of Dellville - tragic day for Perry County!
