Personal Destruction and the Progressive Project Heres a prediction. The press is going to turn on Mr. Obama, soon and in a big way. It will because the media are left-leaning, and Mr. Obamas administration is rapidly becoming a progressive disaster too big to cover up or ignore. In order to separate the failure from the policies that lead inexorably to it, the press will vilify the man. That way they can get behind another candidate who, while peddling the same toxic nostrums, has the singular virtue of not being Mr. Obama. In Tom Wolfes classic _The Right Stuff_, about American test pilots, a pilot was determined not to have the right stuff if he died while test-piloting his experimental aircraft. The idea, as Wolfe presented it, is that this allowed other pilots to believe that they would do better in the same situation -- that their lives werent dependent on hardware over which they had no control, but rather on their own abilities. The left will have to conclude that Mr. Obama simply doesnt have the right stuff to make progressive policies work. Placing the blame on the discredited man will allow them to maintain their suicide pact with their broken ideology.
