Perth is the windiest city in Australia and the third windiest - TopicsExpress

Perth is the windiest city in Australia and the third windiest city in the world. The windiest point on Perths metropolitan coastline is Ocean Reef. Last night was no exception, at 10pm the Ocean Reef weather station measured winds at 106 km/hr. Many question the suitability of the Ocean Reef Marina site for a residential estate with apartment buildings? The vegetation that would be removed (20 hectares) to create the development, is currently protecting the infrastructure and homes behind it from wind and erosion. This development would cop the full brunt of continuous wind and storms. With rising sea levels and possible extreme weather events, some are warning that this is an unacceptably risky location for a development of this kind. Other cities are doing the opposite and building vegetation buffers in front of built up areas to protect them from storms and flooding (see mocoloco/vote/big-team-awarded-335m-to-increase-resiliency-in-lower-manhattan/). You cant just assume, that if the Government approves it, it will be fine. Many of Perths coastal and canal developments are experiencing a variety of expensive and distressing issues from stinking dead fish and seaweed, to sulfide soils, salty bore water, silting and erosion issues. The Mayor and Local MP (our WA Environment Minister) are leading proponents for this development.
