Peter Bogdanovich is 74 today. He is an actor, director, film historian, producer and writer. He was born on July 30, 1939, in Kingston, New York (not Serbia, as sometimes stated). His mother was from a Jewish family in Austria and his father, Borislav Bogdanovich, a Serbian, was an artist and pianist. After studying acting (with the renowned Stella Adler), Peter worked on TV shows and summer stock. A movie addict (he saw several hundred films a year when he was young), he became a film programmer at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has become a historian and has written many articles (in Esquire and elsewhere) and books on film. He moved to Los Angeles with his wife, Polly Platt (a screenwriter) and directed two low-budget films. He became friends with Orson Welles, and has written about him, starting with a book, This Is Orson Welles (1992). He ranks Citizen Kane as the all-time greatest film. (I agree.) In 1971, when he was 32, Bogdanovich cowrote and directed The Last Picture Show (8 Academy Award nominations), starring Cybill Shepherd. They had an affair and he left Polly Platt (married in 1962, divorced in 1971, she died in 2011). From 1971 to 1979, Bogdanovich and Shepherd lived together. Bogdanovich directed What’s Up, Doc (1972, Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal) and Paper Moon (1973, Ryan and Tatum O’Neal). In 1988, he married actress/model Louise Stratton. He was 49, she was 20 (but they had been dating for many years). They divorced in 2001. In the 1980s and 1990s, Bogdanovich had a series of flops and declared bankruptcy twice.
