Peter Cosgrove has been nominated as Australias 26th Governor-General, and will replace Quentin Bryce in March. General Cosgrove served as chief of the Australian Defence Force from 2002 until his retirement from active service in 2005. He came to prominence in 1999, when he commanded international forces in East Timor, overseeing the countrys transition to independence. Australias head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, with the govenor-general operating as her representative.
