Peter Richardson from our very own Home Farm has been named Green Farmer of the Year at Northern Farmer Awards An innovative farmer on a mission to reduce his reliance on fossil fuels has been named Green Farmer of the Year at the Northern Farmer Awards. Peter Richardson, along with Joanne and the rest of the family, grows organic veg for the iconic Riverford vegboxes that he packs on his farm for customers across the North. The award judges were especially impressed with his use of renewable technologies to meet the majority of the farm’s energy needs, which include the installation of a 50kw solar panel system which can meet up to 25% of the box scheme’s energy requirements. This was followed with the installation of a 200kw anaerobic digester which creates clean power by taking existing farm waste – including pig waste – and generating gas to produce heat and electricity. We are of course delighted that all of Peter’s hard work over the years has been recognised. It’s wonderful to have such a celebration of northern farming and Peter’s award shows that we can produce tasty, homegrown food here in the North with a very small carbon footprint. We wanted to share his success with you all. As a result of Peter’s green initiatives he expects to reduce his total energy costs by 60% – and with the addition of heat exchangers to run the farm’s refrigeration system, the energy savings could be as much as 90%.
