Petition by Gurunatha Lankipalli Pulleticheruvupalli, India A 250 year old bodhi (peepul) tree is about to be cut down because a superstitious family thinks it “unlucky”. It can be save if it is declared as Government property. My forefathers planted this tree many years ago in Pulletcheruvupalli, a village in Andhra Pradesh where I live. Many generations have grown up playing in the old tree’s shade. A family that now lives by the tree want to kill this tree because they think it the tree is “unlucky” for them. They have tried to cut its roots, burn its trunk but the tree still survives. The tree is not private property and is on Government land. That’s why I started this petition asking the Collector & District Magistrate, Sri K Ramgopal, I.A.S. to declare the tree as a Govt property. My 90 year old grandfather has been fighting to protect the tree but is only met with insults, threats and humiliation. Our application to the district authorities have been pending for more than one and a half years. If this 250 year old tree, that is a long standing symbol of heritage, is declared as Government property then no one will be able to harm it. However, I need your support to make this happen.
