Petrol in Indonesia costs 55 cents a litre, compared to 97 cents in the US, $1.39 in Australia, & $2.14 in the UK. The Government spends - get this - a massive 14% of its total budget subsidising this below cost, gasoline price. So instead of hospitals, schools and roads we get horrible congestion, pollution and a culture where walking anywhere is seen strictly for the very poor. I cant be strictly impartial on this as raising gas prices is not going to affect me directly, but it would appear there are many many places that the annual $21Billion subsidy budget could be more wisely spent....
