PhD scholarship to study in Berlin (in English) anyone? :D The Berghof Foundation is offering a grant for supervised PhD social science research starting on 1 January 2015, on the topic of Nonviolent Resistance. Particularly welcome are proposals that deal with: · Theoretical reflections on nonviolent resistance in protracted political and social conflicts · Interplay/transitions between violent and nonviolent resistance · Experiences of nonviolent resistance in contexts of armed conflict and peace negotiations · Linkages between nonviolent resistance and conflict transformation · Impact of nonviolent resistance on post-struggle democratisation and/or reconciliation · External support to nonviolent resistance movements · Local nonviolent resistance against international peace(building) operations The grant is available for a two-year period. The research and thesis should be conducted and written in English. Presence at the Berghof Center in Berlin is expected. We are looking for students from any country who: · Have an excellent M.A. degree or equivalent in social sciences, political sciences or a related discipline · Are eligible for PhD studies in Germany · Have extensive academic knowledge or practical experience in themes and areas of conflict transformation and peacebuilding · Show excellent command of spoken and written English (at C1-level or higher) · Are highly motivated to engage actively with the Berghof Foundation team What we offer: · A monthly allowance of EUR 1,250 · A work place at the Berghof Center in Berlin · Professional academic supervision · Access to the Berghof Foundations research resources · Opportunities for active participation in Berghof Foundation team activities How to apply: Applications must be submitted via our online application system by 12 September 2014, 15:00 oclock CEST (Berlin summer time) and have to include the following documents: · A research exposé (maximum 6 pages, Times New Roman, size 12, 1.5 spaced, including all footnotes, plus bibliography of maximum 2 pages, saved in a single PDF file). The research exposé should include: - State of research - Research objectives - Methodology and research design - Work schedule · Curriculum vitae (maximum 2 pages, saved in a PDF file) · References (maximum 2, saved in a single PDF file) · Any relevant supporting documents (including academic transcripts for completed studies, saved in a single PDF file) We kindly ask all applicants to refrain from sending inquiries regarding the status of their application after submission. Unsuccessful applicants are notified in the beginning of October. The most promising candidates are shortlisted and invited for an interview either via phone or in person, depending on the candidates location.
