Phenomenon in which, in consequence of the application of dynamic actions such as seismic agents in undrained conditions, a soil loses its shear strength. The cause is the increase in pore pressure that follows the dynamic stress: the increase, added to the initial value of the pore pressure, comes to equal the value of the normal stresses applied resulting in the cancellation of the effective stress and therefore the resistance. Are particularly susceptible to liquefaction dynamic surface deposits of loose granular soils below the water table
