Philadelphia Needs Permission for More Local Tax Effort for Schools The deadline for the State budget is fast approaching, but far too many state legislators are dragging their feet on reaching an agreement to fund the schools. Schools across the state are struggling to make ends meet. In Philadelphia, City Council has already passed an ordinance to increase the tax on cigarettes to help close the school funding gap. The State has to pass a law to give Philadelphia permission to do so. The good news is that most Philadelphia State Representatives and Senators have publicly stated their support for a $2 per pack tax on cigarettes sold in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, the state law change is at risk because too many Philadelphia lawmakers have not yet pledged their support for Philadelphia’s plan to fund the School District. PCCY’s calls and visits have turned up twelve Philadelphia representatives who are not yet publicly on board. The chance of Philadelphia winning the power to increase its local taxes for schools will get a huge boost if every member of the Philadelphia delegation is clearly behind the schools and this state law change. Please take 10 minutes and call the legislators below and tell them to show their support for the cigarette tax. Philadelphia City Council has done what’s been asked of them by the School District. We urge you to call the following State House members to ask them to publicly state their support for the cigarette tax for our schools: State Representative Phone Number Rep.
