Philippine Army shooters among the best in the world May 18, 2014 10:49 pm by WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL THE Philippine Army shooting team has won the most coveted trophy in the recently concluded Australian Army Skills at Arms Meeting (AASAM) by defeating the best shooters from the armed forces of the United States and 12 other countries. Army spokesman Lt. Col. Noel Detoyato on Sunday said that aside from bagging the Commander-in-Chief trophy, the 18-man Philippine Army contingent headed by Lt. Col. Palmer Parungao was also able to defend its place in the Team Champion Shot Match. The Army team won 14 gold medals, 50 silver medals and two bronze medals in the team matches. The shootfest was held at the Combined Arms Training Center, Puckapunyal Military Area, Victoria, Australia, from April 28 to May 18. Detoyato said the Army shooting team competed in different categories including the rifle and pistol matches, and machine gun for individuals and teams and combined arms (rifles and machine guns) for teams. The Philippine Army team competed against Australia, Brunei Darussalam, New Zealand, United States Marine Corps, United States Army, United Kingdom, Tonga, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, East Timor, Canada and France. The AASAM is an annual shooting competition among different units of the Australian Army aimed to showcase the marksmanship of participating teams. It also serves as a venue to exchange techniques and learn from each other. With the result, Detoyato pointed out, the Philippine Army team proved its very high level of marksmanship, making it equal to the other armies not only in the Asean region but also in the whole world. He explained that marksmanship is one of the basic skills a world-class soldier has to possess in order to gain respect from soldiers of other countries. “In line with the vision of the Army Transformation Roadmap of becoming a world-class Army, excellence in marksmanship is being emphasized by the Philippine Army in all phases of training,” Detoyato said. The victorious Philippine Army contingent is expected to arrive in Manila today.
