Philosophy has never given me more than I can bear. The greater the burden philosophy places upon me, the greater the flourishing afterwards. And the reason for that, I think, is that our inner strength responds to tests that it can handle at the time that we can handle it. Our inner strength is scanning the environment for whatever ledge that we can use to climb ourselves to a higher place. In my experience, we do not take on in general more than we can handle - and we flourish thereby. I wrote in a poem when I was 17, that we must bury ourselves alive in order to be resurrected...
