Phuket Brookies Sports Bureau.....its a long way from Tipperary.... to Towcester....and into the record books... In County Tipperary lies the small town of Thurles, nestling between the Silvermine Mountains (to the north-west) and the Slieveardagh Hills (to the south-east). The town itself is built on a crossing of the River Suir, and is surrounded by some of the finest agricultural land in Ireland. It is also home to one of the oldest racecourses in Ireland (and the world), dating back to 1732, a great racing tradition and history. But one special date in the history books is...26th March 1992. It was on this day that a 17 year old apprentice jockey rode his first winner, on a horse named Legal Steps. Over 21 years later the same jockey rode himself once again into the history books..... on 7th November 2013, at Towcester Racecourse in Northamptonshire, Tony McCoy rode Mountain Tunes to victory and thereby achieved the unprecedented milestone of 4,000 winners. It was close call though...2 lengths down at the final hurdle his horse stumbled, managed to recover and began to fight back....100 yards to go still a length behind...but at the line just snatched victory by half a length. Unbelievable scenes at Towcester...and throughout the World of horse racing. Irish eyes were certainly smiling at what was in reality an all Irish victory.....Mountain Tunes owned by Limerick born J P McManus , trained by County Corks Jonjo ONeill, and ridden by the lad from County Antrim.... A very special day indeed....and many congratulations to Champion Jockey Tony McCoy !! Its a long time since his first winner all those years ago at Thurles...indeed hes come a long way since Tipperary .... and perhaps its a long way to go.... So maybe a few glasses of Tipperarys most famous export, Magners Cider should be raised in celebration....cheers Champ !!
