Physical fitness and mental agility are ingrained in all members of the Defence Forces. In the military, as in sport and life, one competency is useless without the other. A healthy balance is key. Today 2 Brigade held a Biathlon in Gormanston Camp, Co Meath. This competition was designed to test teamwork, physical fitness, marksmanship and composure. Competitors had to run 2 kilometres, fire 5 rounds from the standing position, run 2 kilometres, fire 5 rounds from the kneeling position, run 2 kilometres and fire 5 rounds in the lying position, all the while carrying the extra weight of a 14 kilogramme backpack, helmet, combat vest and personal weapon. The 7th Infantry Battalion took the honours in the Team Event, Private McCabe (27th Infantry Battalion) won the Individual Race and Trooper McCarthy (2 Cavalry Squadron) won the Over 40s category. Well done to all who took part and organised this challenging event. Pictures by Corporal Colin Delany, 2 Brigade HQ
