Picks and musings for 030914 by hsw 18 tracks 162 races! Wow! California Chrome, took no shine to his opposition in the 2014 edition of the San Felipe Stakes, a stepping stone to the Santa Anita Derby, and beyond, the son of Lucky Pulpit, “CC” zoomed past his rivals and immediate bloodline to move to the top of the crop, just a few steps ahead of unbeaten Samraat, on the east coast- The only fly in the dish served up by California Chrome, is what transpired later in the afternoon when Game On Dude, kept safe from behemoth Will Take Charge, to also score a front end victory in a much ballyhooed Big Cap edition - so the question may be for those doubting California Chrome, a bit, is “was the track just right for him on San Felipe Stakes day?” - Emitting from the gate like a laser beam aimed at Mars, California Chrome, was soon challenged by what appeared to be all his rivals but in short he made duck soup of the all including Midnight Hawk, who gave it a good try running 2nd- Therefore yet another look at the pedigree of California Chrome, is in order- regular readers of this space may recall California Chrome, was subject of some scrutiny about six weeks ago, when I was into figuring the “Big Heart Cross Factor” - a theory I regretfully abandoned due to time constraints- but essentially what this theory implied was a horse with a high number of crosses to Mahmoud and Blue Larkspur & War Admiral and Princequillo (big hearts) in a nine generation look at the particular pedigree, should indicate a horse with genetic advantages- the kind reader can easily see why I have let this “theory set for a while as it is a complex computation-but lets reflect of the composition of California Chrome. Firstly a comparison of the “BHCF” of Midnight Hawk to winner California Chrome- Midnight Hawk > Blue Larkspur (3) & Mahmoud (7) & Princequillo (7) & War Admiral (3) total crosses =20 >>>> now California Chrome > Blue Larkspur (9) & Mahmoud (6) & Princequillo (9) & War Admiral (11) total crosses =35!! Since the dam of California Chrome, is inbred to leading broodmare of modern times in my opine (not that I ever pay attention to what I know or write when it comes to picking race!) Numbered Account, 3x3 via ¾ bro and sis Polish Numbers and Dance Number!- I am a bit ashamed of myself for not loving California Chrome, but that is my failing, as the way I play horses at the moment dismisses having any “favorite” runners- the cost of trying to pick every race & winner in each race run in North America!! Alas!- In the end California Chrome, reminds me of Buddy Gil, who beat speedy Kafwain, in the ‘03 Santa Anita Derby, the former went on to race in the big Derby in Louisville and ran 17th or some such- but I think California Chrome, beat a better bunch than Buddy Gil, did when he took the ‘03 San Felipe - interestingly Buddy Gil, stemmed from high totems ff 1-N of Chelandry (Forty Niner, Swale etc,) while California Chrome, is a American family “4” or A4 The A4 family is not without merit and if you look at the chain of broodmare sires attached to the tail-female of California Chrome, then things become much more focused than just a rudimentary rude remark concerning his sire. >Not For Love>Polish Numbers>Sor Ivor>Vaguely Noble>Ribot>Princequillo>Beau Pere>Sir Galahad>!!!……….. back to Lexington’s daughter of 1860 Minnie Minor! She in turn was ancestress of Clyde Van Dusen, a gelding who won the 1929 Kentucky Derby- it may have helped that he was a son of Man O War, but what is of current value is that the family has already visited to hallowed winners circle on Derby day! Also of importance when considering if California Chrome, has the genetic gumbo to square off with the big name sire offspring he is sure to face on Derby Day at Churchill Downs-is the fact that family member Durbar, won the English Derby in 1914! (which is a story onto itself)- Samraat, the current darling of the NYRA has a BHCF of >> Blue Larkspur (12) & Mahmoud (7) & Princequillo (6) & War Admiral (3) total crosses = (28) --- as long as we are considering the resurrected BHCF theory of mine- a look at Uncle Sigh may be pertinent > Uncle Sigh > Blue Larkspur (7) & Mahmoud (7) & Princequillo (6) & War Admiral (4) total crosses = 24!- or.. California Chrome (35) Samraat (28) Uncle Sigh (24) Midnight Hawk (20) Hsw Aqueduct 1-2 2-3 3-2 4-1 5-6 6-2 7-3 8-8 9-4 Calder 1-3 2-7 3-5 4-3 5-4 6-2 8-4 8-3 Fair ground 1-2 2-2 3-1 4-6 5-1 6-8 7-1e 8-11 9-6 Fonner 1-1 2-8 3-9 4-1 5-3 6-8 7-2 8-4 9-1 Golden gate 1-6 2-5 3-4 4-3 5-1 6-1 7-7 8-2 9-3 Gulfstream 15 2-1 3-3 4-4 5-1 6-1 7-8 8-3 9-3 10-1 11-6 Hawthorne 1-1 2-1 3-5 4-7 5-1e 6-4 7-5x3 8-10 Los Alamitos 1-3 2-1 3-7 4-2 5-3 6-1 7-1 8-2 9-5 Louisiana downs 1-5 2-4 3-5 4-5 5-2 6-3 7-9 8-3 Mountaineer 1-8 2-4 3-3 4-5 5-2 6-3 7-2 8-5 9-7 Oaklawn 1-3x4 2-7x3 3-1e 4-5x1 5-3 6-4 7-1 8-3 9-1 Parx 1-5 2-3 3-2 4-4 5-4 6-7 7-5 8-1x3x4x5 Remington 1-1 2-9 3-2 4-2 5-5 6-2 7-7 8-1 9-3 10-1 Rillito 1-7 2-6 3-6 4-1 5-2 6-4 7-1x8 8-5 Santa Anita 1-7 2-1 3-6x1 4-2 5-1 6-1 7-2 9-3 9-8 Sunland 1-7 2-6 3-9 4-7 5-2 6-1 7-3 8-7 9-1 10-7 11-2x5x4 Tampa bay down 1-4 2-2 3-6 4-6 5-6 6-2 7-1 8-4 9-1 10-9 Turf paradise 1-4 2-4 3-1 4-4 5-4 6-6 7-3 8-6 hsw
