Picture (c) Jock Tame. Did you know? In South Africa - and most of the world - around 60% or more of grasslands are compromised by various forms of development, including mining (especially open-cast mining), urban and industrial expansion, crop cultivation and forestry plantation development. But grasslands need to be protected because, among other things, they sequester carbon, have high biodiversity and are eco-tourism centres, are ideal for rangeland cattle farming (which his the one type of human activity which, if properly manged, can actually benefit grasslands), and ensure the nations water supply. In South Africa, only 2% of grasslands are formally protected and most of those that have some level of protection are very fragmented, providing only isolated patches of pristine habitat.
