#PiersMorgan: #why #America has had #enough of the #charmlesstalkshowhost #CNN has #announced that it is to #axe its #primetime Piers Morgan #Liveshow. It cites #failingaudiencefigures, but #could there be #more to the #fallingout than that? Share 846 Tweet this Email Piers Morgan Piers Morgan: his #outspoken #views, #especially on #guns, won him #fewfriends in the #US. Photograph: Angela Weiss/Getty Images North America Name: Piers Morgan. Age: 48. Appearance: #British heritage potato, with eyes drawn on. Occupation: Unemployed. I thought he went to the US in search of work. Nothing yet? He did all right there. After being fired by the Daily Mirror in 2004, Morgan appeared as a judge on Americas Got Talent for two seasons, and went to win the US celebrity version of The Apprentice in 2008. And? And then he replaced Larry King as the host of CNNs flagship 9pm talkshow. But Piers Morgan Live has just been cancelled – the last show will air in March. So will he be, erm, returning home? Not just yet – his contract with CNN runs until September. Is his sacking anything to do with the fact that Morgan was recently interviewed under caution by Scotland Yard in connection with phone hacking? Apparently not. CNN has denied it. Did US viewers simply fail to appreciate Morgans special lack of charm? Its true that he remained a resolutely unassimilated British presence. His Twitter feed is largely given over to comments about football and cricket, and spats with personalities most Americans will never have heard of. Wasnt there also a gun thing? Yes – Morgans outspoken campaigning in favour of gun control riled much of heartland America. How could they manage to hate him for all the wrong reasons, when there are so many good ones to choose from? The real problem was ratings. Morgan rarely matched Kings viewing figures, and his most recent shows have had some of the smallest audiences in his three years at the helm. What sort of preposterous bluster did Morgan put forward to explain away this failure? Actually, he was remarkably upfront. Its been a painful period and lately we have taken a bath in the ratings, he said. He can be disarmingly self-aware at times, cant he? Remember when he let Australian cricketer Brett Lee bowl at him until his ribs broke? Its true, Morgan does have a particular knack for delighting his detractors. Do say: I dont know anything about this cricket business, but someone throwing hard objects at Piers Morgan? I would definitely watch an hour of that every night. Dont say: Welcome back! theguardian/media/shortcuts/2014/feb/24/piers-morgan-america-talkshow-host-cnn?guni=Article:manual-trailblock%20package:Position2
