Piety – Making Ordinary Time Extraordinary Monday, August 19th, 2013 Praying for Piety To help make your Ordinary Time Extraordinary this summer, the Spiritual Life Commission at St. Ignatius Church, a Jesuit parish in Chestnut Hill, Mass., offers you simple prayer “exercises” based on the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit—Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel (right judgment), Knowledge, Fortitude (courage), Piety (reverence), and Fear of the Lord (wonder and awe). Imagine yourselves as disciples in Luke’s Emmaus gospel (Luke 24:13-35), journeying together, reflecting on the mystery of the Resurrection and how the various gifts of Christ’s Spirit solidify our oneness in Him. Without a doubt, you are bound to meet Jesus on the way! Piety (Reverence) The gift I seek: I pray for Piety, which prompts me to imitate the Heavenly Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in their love for one another and for all creation made in their own image. May I be filled with a joyful fervor that comes from true friendship with God, and may I be blessed with a child-like love for God and an eagerness to revere God in all things. Reflection: * In what ways is the Spirit forming the image of Christ within me? How do I reverence that image? * How do I recognize the holiness of others and their unique reflection of Christ’s likeness? * Is my heart joyful as a follower of Christ? * How much of my prayer is in thanksgiving to God? Prayer Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy. Guard me, O Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy. –St Augustine
