Piney Woods Region-Giant Salvinia Update: Lake O’ the Pines - TopicsExpress

Piney Woods Region-Giant Salvinia Update: Lake O’ the Pines staff has discovered multiple infestations of giant salvinia at their boat ramps. The latest of these events occurred at Johnson Day Use Area on 24 July. It is believed that giant salvinia is being transported on boat trailers from other area lakes heavily infested with the plant. Anyone visiting an infested lake should thoroughly inspect all recreational equipment prior to leaving the lake minimizing the transport of invasive species. Town Bluff Project continues to make strides reducing the acreage of giant salvinia. An integrated management plan used to control giant salvinia has been very successful. The remaining infested areas that exist on the lake have not been chemically treated and are currently being utilized as monitored weevil rearing sites. Texas Park and Wildlife Department representatives were very pleased and plan to share the results with staff from Sabine River Authority who are currently fighting 1000’s of acres of giant salvinia on Toledo Bend Reservoir.
