Pink Trees For Pauline Organisers of the nation-wide initiative, Pink Trees for Pauline, are hoping to attract the involvement of many more towns and cities across the country in the drive to support cancer awareness. Inset: Pink Trees for Pauline is a non-profit cancer awareness project aimed at raising funds by selling pink fabric and adorning trees in towns and cities across South Africa . Currently, more than 40 towns throughout South Africa have accepted the challenge of adorning their trees with metres and metres of pink fabric on October 18 to create awareness and raise funds for people affected by the illness. Traditionally, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but the Pink Trees for Pauline Project highlights all cancers. Pink Trees for Pauline was launched by Carol-Ann van Jaarsveld in the Karoo town of Graaff-Reinet in 2012. Van Jaarsveld lost both her mother and grandmother, both named Pauline, through cancer. Thousands of meters of pink fabric were sold, the tree trunks were covered and the message, Combat Cancer and Treasure Life, was celebrated. At the same time R210 000 was raised for organisations that provide services to people affected by cancer in the Graaff-Reinet and surrounding areas. This year, this initiative is expanded nationally and towns are challenged to participate. Enthusiasm for the project is rapidly spreading - City Parks in Johannesburg gave permission for the project in all the suburbs (a total of some 350 000 trees) and four Namibian towns, a town in Canada anda town in Ireland will also participate. The plan of action is to sell thousands of meters of pink fabric, at a minimum price of R20 per meter, to wrap trees in. The funds raised in each town will be used in that area to address needs like wheelchairs, wigs and prosthesis, transport of cancer patients, home nursing, feeding schemes and accommodation during treatment.
