Placement of Political Signs states, “Municipal ordinances advocating stricter control take precedence over state law.” The City of Augusta has such an ordinance. • Sec. 13-3. - Posting advertisements on posts, trees, etc.; placing political signs on public property; placing written material on unoccupied vehicles. (a) No person shall place bills or other advertising matter on any post, pole or tree within any street in the city. (b) No person shall place political signs or political advertising matter on or over any park, school lot, traffic circle or other public property within the compact or built-up section of the city (map attached). (c) No person shall place, deposit or throw any advertisement, handbill or other written material upon any unoccupied motor vehicle in any parking area used in connection with the Augusta Civic Center and owned or leased by the city, or upon the grounds within such parking area, or within any public way within the city. Violation hereof shall constitute a misdemeanor, and any person found guilty thereof shall be subject to a fine in accordance with section 1-10 • Sec. 2-460. - Other. (Civic Center) (a) No political advertising of any kind or character shall be permitted except for signs and posters displayed during political events at the civic center where a fee has been charged for use of the facility. Political signs in violation of Sec 13-3 or Sec 2-460, may be removed by City staff and stored at the Public Works Garage up to two weeks following election day. Reminder: City Center will be a polling place beginning Oct 3, 7:45 am – 4:30 pm, when absentee voting takes place. No signs are allowed within 250’ of any entrance to a polling place. On election day, City polling places are the Armory, Civic Center, City Center and Cony High School. Political signs are allowed, with owner’s permission, on private property anywhere, anytime in the city. Private property includes the grassy areas (esplanades) between the sidewalk and street that is NOT maintained by City staff. Please contact the City Clerks office with any questions.
