Playing with suction can be a hair raising experience! The children at Kaleidoscope are allowed to vacuum with a small shop vac that is JUST FOR PLAY. They LOVE to vacuum up fluffy pom poms (also grand for visual tracking and planning...a necessary skill for reading success). (SIDE NOTE: I love to attach literature to experiences, so the book The Rhyming Dust Bunnies goes along with this exploration beautifully!) This child went on to explore what else the shop vacs suction was strong enough to pick up. This led into all kinds of trial and error, comparing and contrasting and actively exploring the meaning of the words: heavy, light, strong, big, small and of course suction. She also had the opportunity to form a hypothesis as she predicted whether an object would be able to be lifted by the power of suction. During her explorations, she caught her hair...and guess what!? It FEELS REALLY GOOD! (dont knock it until you try it!!)
