Walsh, UW Board of Regents Gerald Whitburn, UW Board of Regents The controversial and cruel maternal deprivation experiments planned by the University of Wisconsin-Madison are considered extreme and unethical by many in the scientific community. Yet such methods are being revived in Dr. Kalin’s outdated torture experiments on baby monkeys. The Animal Welfare Act requires any research involving animals to be rigorously scrutinized by a full oversight committee. Yet Dr. Kalin’s protocol for these highly controversial and cruel tests left out several committee members who are opposed to these cruel tests in the approval process. Furthermore, the public has a right to insist that federal tax dollars not be wasted on unnecessary “terror testing,” when far more useful and painless methods of research are already available that do not involve animal suffering. The University of Wisconsin holds itself as a premier and progressive institution. These unnecessary and barbaric studies—rammed through the approval process without full engagement of the committee—do not reflect the values of a leading research university. Please cancel the unethical and unnecessary torture of baby monkeys in these maternal deprivation tests. Sincerely, [Your name]
