Please be careful drivers from Helderberg Basin to Cape Town CBD tomorrow! Eyewitness News March 2014 CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape ANC’s Songezo Mjongile says hundreds of informal settlement residents are being mobilised to march to the provincial legislature on Wednesday. The party will protest for better services for the poor. The ANC has given its backing to previous protests held in the Cape Town city centre. There was a heavy police presence between Borchards Quarry and the airport turnoff following demonstrations in the area on Tuesday. In February informal traders in the Cape Town CBD were warned by police to close shop ahead of an illegal march. Activists had vowed to stage a demonstration in the city centre despite no permission being granted by authorities. Protesters were marching for proper housing and sanitation in poor areas. A demonstration late last year turned violent. “With the march about a month ago where we raised issues of service delivery, their provincial response has been very dismissive. “If we don’t get a positive response, we will come back to the city centre to raise issues of service delivery which they have failed to deal with in the past five years,” said Mjongile. The city’s Priya Reddy says “The ANC in the Western Cape applied for a march through the Gatherings Act. The City of Cape Town and other role players have approved the march to the provincial legislature which will go ahead on Wednesday.”
