Please be wary of South African Psychiatry. South African psychiatry departments are exclusively devoted to an extreme pharmaceutical treatment approach. They teach organic, institutional psychiatry. There is no such thing as a department of Psychoanalysis in South Africa! No psychoanalysts, nor psycho-dynamic or humanist, existentialist psychiatrists have been trained in South Africa and if there is one, I havent heard of him/her. South African psychiatrists, have minimal training in verbal psychotherapy and poor abilities in this area. They rely on excessive over medication. South Africas psychiatry departments were allied to, and served the forensic and lock up needs of the Apartheid regime and to this day remain Custodial rather than Curative! The emphasis from Wits medical school is that, mental illness can be controlled but not cured. The future of a South African psychiatric patient is bleak and warrants despair. The Medical Model is not only the dominant model in South Africa, it is the ONLY approach here! I havent met a soul who disagrees, and, criticism is vigorously suppressed! It is actually suppressed with the zeal one would expect from fanatical members of fundamentalist sects. Under Professor Hart, Wits Medical School, taught an extreme genetic, biological, pharmacological approach to psychiatric treatment. Could this be the same genetic and biological ideology that underpinned Apartheid theories of racial determinism of human character? Even though the broader Wits University took a liberal political approach, not the department of psychiatry! Patients are massively over drugged and over confined in South Africa!
