Please post some ideas for all of us with horses that are trying to stay warm in this May snow. My mare has hay available, tank heater is plugged in and a mini companion but is still shivering. This is so scary. Thank you Katie: You are doing all the right things. Plenty of grass hay will help keep the horses warm from the inside - so extra helpings tonight are in order. So long as the horses have a place to get out of the weather such as a stall or shed, they should be fine. Shivering is OK - this is how they generate extra body heat from the inside also - but it burns a lot of calories, hence the extra hay. However, if your horses dont have a good shelter to stay dry in, OR if they are old, skinny, foals, or any horse without a lot of body fat - I would recommend blanketing with a winter water proof blanket. IF they are already wet and covered in snow when you place the blanket, a great trick is to put a wool blanket or cooler on first, then the outer blanket. Remove the wool/cooler in about 20 minutes once it has abscorbed most of the moisture. You can also take the horse for a brief walk (10 minutes) every few hours and this will help them generate some body heat as well. We hope everyone stays warm, dry, and safe during this crazy weather!
