Kathy King for Texas State Board of Education, District 7 Today was a busy day at the Texas State Board of Education. The board listened to recommendations for new History textbooks. Since textbooks must align with the standards (from 2010) the insanity continues to frightening level. Texas students may soon be reading in their history textbooks that the American system of democracy was inspired by Moses, segregated schools weren’t all that bad and taxes imposed for programs like Social Security haven’t measurably improved society. David Bradley, a board member who helped write the standards, said the textbooks are supposed to reflect the standards, and the standards are set by the politicians who win election to the board. At least in Texas, he said, conservatives usually win – especially if they run on pledges to bring conservative values back to public schools. “If anything in politics can move a crowd, it’s holding up an American history book that diminishes the role of the Founding Fathers and Ronald Reagan,” Bradley said. THIS INSANITY MUST STOP! Again I stress the importance of leaving politics at the door and adopt standards and textbooks that are factual, not left or right! Right now the teaching of History in Texas is in an emergency state. WE MUST ACT NOW! If you can, attend the public meeting at the SBOE on September 16th at 10 AM.
