Very alarming to see the amount of representation we have making decisions on our behalf within congress that have never served in the military. For 30 years, AFSA has designated a week to the education of its members on how to engage the legislative process and make an impact on legislation that affects our members. Oct. 6-10 is this year’s Legislative Awareness Week. The purpose of this “Legislative Awareness Week” is three-fold: •Call attention to pending legislation (federal, state & local) that could impact members and identify ways individual citizens can support or oppose those efforts; •Help non-member Airmen understand the important role AFSA’s legislative efforts play in their lives through our legislative efforts; •Educate members on what AFSA’s legislative team is working on, and the role individual Airmen play in determining our advocacy targets. Legislative Awareness Week also provides Divisions and Chapters an opportunity to engage the local community on the legislative process, to discuss how AFSA is aiding enlisted members and their families, and to stress what Chapters and individuals can do to influence the legislative process. AFSA member or not, currently serving or a Veteran, in uniform or in support of one who is, we encourage all affiliated with the military to take this opportunity to inventory your own levels of legislative awareness.
