Please take a minute to sign and share this petition. Crossroads Training Services supports carers by providing them with training so that they can continue in their role as carers. You might wonder what that even means. Picture this - your child is born disabled, you lift them and change their nappies the way you do with babies, they get bigger and bigger and heavier and heavier but no-one thinks to mention that there are safer ways to do these things, ways to minimise the stress on your back. My back aches, my wrists ache, my shoulders ache... this is all because Ive been picking up a four year old that cant support his weight the same way you lift a 6lb baby. Cross Roads taught me how to move him more effectively whilst protecting myself. Occupational Therapy provided me with a hoist to help lift him. They didnt show me how to use it. I waited months for a sling. Crossroads trained me to use the hoist and provided me with a sling until I could get one from the Occupational Therapy Team When I finally got a sling it was the trainer from Crossroads who spotted that Hugh wasnt safe in it - he could easily fall out. She organised for the Occupational Therapist to order a new one (which it turns out is also inappropriate). The service is vital to provide carers with training and support - the type of training and support that isnt provided elsewhere. They are at risk of closure because Birmingham City Council is cutting their funding. Please support them by signing their online petition and encouraging others to do so too. Once again, the council are cutting services for people that are too tired, too busy and too worn down to fight back. Tomorrow Im attending a strategy meeting to see how we CAN fight back and save a service that is vital to families like ours across the city.
