Police abort Baraje PDP faction’s meeting at Sokoto Gov’s lodge. The PDP faction eventually moved to Kano State Governor’s Lodge to discuss. The police on Sunday night aborted a meeting of the Kawu Baraje faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abuja. Members of the splinter group, who had planned to meet at the Sokoto State Governor’s Lodge in the Asokoro District of the Federal Capital Territory, were stopped from going ahead with the meeting when anti-riot policemen stormed the venue in two trucks. The police arrived at the venue at about 7.45 pm, a few minutes before 8 p.m. when the meeting was to hold. Following the siege, members of the faction, moved to the Kano State Governor’s Lodge, also in the same District, where they eventually held the meeting. Those at meeting were Governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa) , Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) and Murtala Nyako (Adamawa). Others present were Senators Bukola Saraki, Danjuma Goje, Abdullahi Adamu, former Kebbi State Governor, Adamu Aliero. The National Chairman of the faction, Kawu Baraje, Deputy National Chairman, Sam Sam Jaja, National Secretary, Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Vice Chairman, North West, Ibrahim Kazaure, were also present. Both Governors Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara and Babangida Aliyu of Niger, who are members of the faction, were absent. The National Publicity Secretary of the faction, also known as the “New PDP,” Chukwuemeka Eze, confirmed the siege. “We are being careful not to play into the hands of certain state-sponsored agents currently on the prowl,” Mr Eze told journalists. It was gathered that the faction, at the meeting, discussed the option of moving into another party. Members also resolved to continue with the reconciliation meetings whenever President Goodluck Jonathan was ready to convene such trouble- shooting parleys. In a statement earlier on Sunday, the faction lamented that the past few weeks had witnessed the implementation of a “coordinated and systematic plot to traumatise, annihilate and cripple us economically and politically in flagrant disregard of Chapter IV Section 33 to 45 of the Nigerian Constitution that guarantees our fundamental human rights as Nigerians.” It noted in particular that its national secretariat in the Maitama District of the FCT, as well as its secretariats in many states, had been sealed by the police. It said the FCTA had also marked its national secretariat for demolition. The faction also said that the Adamawa Governor’s Lodge where it also planned to use was also sealed while some of its prominent members were being harassed. -PREMIUM TIMES
