Police appeal for calm in Ikorodu The Police in Lagos Wednesday appealed for calm among commercial motorcycle riders in Ikorodu following the misunderstanding that occurred between them and some Policemen on Tuesday over the enforcement of the law on restriction of movement of motorcycles in the State. The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Abubakar Manko, who made the appeal while briefing newsmen after the weekly State Security Council meeting chaired by the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), said the most appropriate thing to do was for the motorcyclists to allow the law to take its course. Giving a brief background of what took place Tuesday between the Okada riders and some Police men, Manko told the newsmen, “What happened in Ikorodu was that we have a law, a Lagos State law on restriction of movement of commercial motorcycles and some men from the Rapid Response Squad went there to enforce that law and there was misunderstanding between them and the commercial motorcyclists”. According to the Police boss, “In the process, the Police men were mobbed and, unfortunately, one of the commercial motorcyclists had a gun injury and later died in hospital. That was yesterday and the authorities took actions to ensure that there was peace around Ikorodu axis”. He said the Okada riders regrouped on Wednesday morning and said they wanted to claim the corpse of the dead motorcyclist and also for the authorities to release the injured Police man in the hospital to them adding, “That, to my mind, is not proper”. Manko appealed to the Okada riders not to take laws into their hands, adding, “If there is misunderstanding between these groups, the most appropriate thing for them is to see what actions to be taken by the heads of these agencies. They should allow the law to take its course”. Emphasizing the determination of the security agencies in the State to enforce the Law on restriction of operations of commercial motorcycles in the State, the Police Commissioner who urged residents of Ikorodu to go about their lawful businesses, declared, “That law is going to be enforced by the Police and other security agencies no matter what happens”. Also present at the briefing were Commander Air Force 435 Baser Services Group, Ikeja, Air Commodore Sunday Wukangha, Commander NNS Beecroft, Apapa, Navy Commodore Odogwu Ezekobe, Commander 9 Brigade, Ikeja Cantonment, Brigadier-General Adeniyi Oyebade, Director State Security Services (SSS), Mr. Ben Olayi and Special Adviser to the Governor on Security and Policing Matters, Major Tunde Panox (rtd).
