Police are warning people not to play in and around the Lock at Swarkestone. Officers attended the area on Sunday, August 4 when it was reported that a group of seven people were playing in and around the Lock near Pingle Lane. A group of females aged between 14 and 17 years of age and three men were diving into the lock, riding bikes into the lock and causing serious anti-social behaviour. PC Rob Buckley from the Melbourne Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “This particular group has caused a lot of concern in the local area, besides causing problems for other people they also put themselves at risk with such dangerous behaviour and potentially anyone that might have had to rescue them. “They all received a warning and anti-social behaviour letters have been sent out to the parents of the teenagers, we hope that it doesn’t have to get more serious than that.” Darren Green, the Waterways Manager for the Canal & River Trust said:” We understand that people want to cool off when the weather’s good but this really isn’t the way to do it. “The water is usually far colder than expected which can cause cramps in even the strongest swimmers and it can also contain some pretty nasty diseases which could cause blindness and worse. “The reports of people jumping into the water while boats are using the lock are particularly worrying as locks have underwater sluices which can generate strong currents. “All-in-all it’s just not very sensible to jump into the canal, we want people to enjoy the waterways on a sunny day but please, look after yourself and stay out of the water.” If you witness dangerous behaviour in and around Swarkestone Lock or any waterway please contact Derbyshire Police on: 101, in an emergency always call: 999
